Scope: 1.1Thistestmethodcoverstheminiaturevanetestinverysofttostiffsaturatedfine-grainedclayeysoils(ϕ=0).Knowledgeofthenatureofthesoilinwhicheachvanetestistobemadeisnecessaryforassessmentoftheapplicabilityandinterpretationofthetestresults.Note1—Itisrecommendedthattheminiaturevanetestbeconductedinfine-grained,predominatelyclaysoilswithanundrainedshearstrengthlessthan1.0tsf[100kPa].Vanefailureconditionsinhigherstrengthclayandpredominantlysiltysoilsmaydeviatefromtheassumedcylindricalfailuresurface,therebycausingerrorinthemeasuredstrength.1.2Thistestmethodincludestheuseofbothconventionalcalibratedtorquespringunits(MethodA)andelectricaltorquetransducerunits(MethodB)withamotorizedminiaturevanesheardevice.1.3Laboratoryvaneisanidealtooltoinvestigatestrengthanisotropyintheverticalandhorizontaldirections,ifsuitablesamples(specimens)areavailable.1.4AllmeasuredandcalculatedvaluesshallconformtotheguidelinesforsignificantdigitsandroundingestablishedinPracticeD6026.1.5ThevaluesstatedineitherSIunitsorinch-poundunitsaretoberegardedseparatelyasstandard.Thevaluesstatedineachsystemmaynotbeexactequivalents;therefore,eachsystemshallbeusedindependentlyoftheother.Combiningvaluesfromthetwosystemsmayresultinnon-conformancewiththestandard.1.6Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
