Equipmentused[edit] Theshearvaneconsistsofastraightrodwithfourvanesononeend,arrangedinacruciformpattern,andacombinedhandle/torquegauge.Therodisinsertedintothesoiltoadepthof500mmandrotatedatarateofbetween6and12degreesperminute.Oncethesoilfailsinshearthegaugeshowsthemaximumtorqueapplied.Thegaugeismarkedwithascalethatconvertsthetorqueintoashearstrength(measuredinkiloNewtonspersquaremetre).Therearetwoscalesforusewithtwodifferentsizesofvane–150-by-75-millimetre(5.9 in× 3.0 in)vanesareusedforsoilswithshearstrengthsupto50 kN/m2and100-by-50-millimetre(3.9 in× 2.0 in)vanesforstrongersoils.IntheUnitedKingdomthemethodologyisgovernedbyBritishStandard1377(Methodsoftestforsoilsforcivilengineeringpurposes).[1] Theshearvaneisasimpleandportablepieceofequipment.[2]Thetestissuitableforclaysoilsclassifiedassofttofirm.Byremouldingthesampleandretestinganindicationofthesensitivityoftheclaycanalsobefound.[1]Thetesthasalsobeenusedtomeasuretheshearstrengthofmortarmixes,whereithasbeenshowntocorrelatewiththeslumpvalue.[2]Theequipmenthasalsobeenusedsinceatleast1967toassesstheshearstrengthofpacksofsnowatriskofformingaslabavalanche.[3] ThetestwaspioneeredbyLCarlsonandAWSkemptonin1948.Therehasbeensomedisputeoveritsaccuracysincethen.CarlsonandSkemptonbelievedthatitprovidedahighervaluethanthatindicatedbyunconfinedcompressivetestsandinfactagreedbetterwiththevaluesexpectedingeotechnicaltheory.However1973researchclaimedthatthetestactuallyprovidedanunder-estimateofshearstrengthcomparedtocompressivetestswhereagoodqualityofsampleisobtainable.Thediscrepancyhasbeenattributedtothedisturbanceofthesamplecausedbytheinsertionoftheshearvane.[1]
