Therear-enginedBongoshadafullchassis(usingthesameMazda1000engineasothervariantsmountedtoafour-speedtransaxleattherear)andwereverystrongandduetothelowgearing,abletocarryhalfaton.Duetorustandpoormaintenance,theseBongosarenowrare.The1000pickupwhichwasbuiltforcommercialuses,andthecargoandpassengervansallusedadoublewishboneandcoilspringsuspensionforthefrontwheels,andatrailing-armsuspensionandcoilspringsattherearwheels. DuetothepopularityoftheBongo,Mazdadecidedtomanufactureaminibus,calledtheMazdaParkwaystartingin1974until1997,sharedwiththelargerMazdaTitantruckplatform. Secondgeneration(1977–1983)[edit] SecondgenerationMazdaBongo(pre-facelift) SecondgenerationMazdaE2200(facelift) Afteratwo-yearhiatus,thenextBongovanappearedinSeptember1977.Itwasamid-enginerearwheeldrivevehicle.FordsoldthisversionofthevanastheFordEconovan,whileMazdasolditforexportastheE1300,E1400,andE1600,dependingonenginesize.BeginninginOctober1979a2.2-litredieselenginewasalsoavailableincommercialversions,soldinexportastheE2200.Thisappearedinthepassengerversion"BongoMultiWagon"inFebruary1980.[8]TheBongoMultiWagonhadoriginallybeensoldwitha1.8-literpetrolengineonly.AstheE1600,thismodelwentonsaleinGreatBritainin1982,onlyayearbeforebeingreplaced.TheBritishmarketonlyreceivedthelongwheelbase1-tonnepanelvanversionwithsmall,twinnedrearwheels.TheUKmodelhasafive-speedmanualgearboxwithacolumnmountedshifter.[9] ThisgenerationwasalsomanufacturedbyKiainSouthKorea,astheKiaBongoandCeres.TheBongo/Ceresunderwentanumberoffaceliftsandwasstillavailableaslateas1999.
