JeanacceptsdefeattotheTitans Reachingtheheadquarters,Jeanishorrifiedbyhisdecisiontoexploithiscomrades'deaths,beforeattackingthesupplysoldiershidinginthebuilding,tellingthemtheirinactioniswhatledtothesoldiers'deaths.HeisinterruptedbythearrivalofTitansoutsidethebuilding,attractedtothelargenumberofhumansthathavegathered.LosinghopethatbeatingtheTitansisimpossible,JeanisleftstunnedatthearrivalofanabnormalthatproceedstofightofftheTitans.Mikasa,Armin,andConniearriveinshortorder,explainingthattheabnormalishelpingthem.[45] JeangetsfuriouswhenReinersuggestsprotectingtherampagingTitan HeassistsintakingdownhiscaptorswhoturnouttobemembersoftheReevescorporation,ledbythepresidenthimself.[67] Attheirnewbase,Jeanexpressesworryoverwhotheirenemiesreallyare,andtheorizesthattheywillbehungiftheirrevolutiontoreplacethekingwithHistoriafails.[68]HehearsErwin'splanfromNifatohandoverErenandHistoriatotheMilitaryPolicesothattheycanfindRodReiss.HeisshockedwhenLevistartsattackingHistoriaandtellshimthatsuchactionisunnecessary.[69] AftertheSurveyCorpsisaccusedofthemurderofDimoReeves,Jeanisamongthemembersthatremaininhiding.Hepassesunnoticedamongthecrowdsgatheredtohandoutflyersanddiscussthefugitives,wearingahatandcloaktodisguisehimself.Uponrejoiningtheothersatastable,hepassesouttheflyersdetailingLevi'sappearanceandcrimes,andexpressesdoubtabouttheircircumstances.HestatesheexpectedtobekilledbyaTitan,notforcedtobecomeahatedfugitivefromthelaw.Disheartened,heexpressesdoubtsaboutLeviandtheircurrentsituation,statingthathewouldrefusetokillanotherhumaneveniforderedtodoso.[70] AclankagainsttheairshipdrawsJean'sattentionasagirlrollsintothecabinandfiresarifleintothegroupofsoldiers,strikingSasha.Jeanretaliates,buthisshotmisseswhentheboyfrombeforepushesheroutoftheway.Ashissoldiersapprehendthetwochildren,herushesovertoSashaandcallsforfirstaid.WhenFlochsuggeststhrowingthechildrenoutoftheairship,Jeanasksifthatwouldreallystopallthebloodshed.[138]JeantakesthechildrentomeetZekeYeagerandexplainstoErenandtheothershowtheysneakedaboardandshotSasha.Shortlythereafter,ConniefollowsuptoinformeveryonethatSashahasdied.JeantellsErenthatthisishisfault,becausehegottheSurveyCorpsinvolved.[139] WarforParadisarc AfterreturningtoParadis,thesoldierswhowerekilledinLiberioareburied.Whilevisitingtheirgraves,ConnieandJeanareforcedtodefendNiccolo,aMarleyanprisoner-of-war,whoisbeingharassedbyanothersoldier.LearningthatNiccolohadwantedtovisitSasha'sgrave,theyleadhimtowhereshewasburied.[140] JeanquestionsArmin'sideaoftalkingtoEren JeansitsquietlyinaroomwithMikasaAckerman,Connie,andArmin.HebringsupthetopicoftheAnti-MarleyanVolunteers'arrest,surprisedthatDotPixiswouldresorttotheuseofstrong-armtactics,buthesupposesthatitwasinevitablewhiletheyareunawareofZeke'strueplansandhisinfluenceonEren.[141]TheydiscussthesituationregardingtheYeagerbrothersandMikasastillwantstobelieveinEren,butJeanpointsouthowhehasforcedallofthemontothebattlefieldeventhoughheonceclaimedtheywereimportanttohim.[142] AftertheYeageristsescapefromconfinement,Jeanattendsameetingwiththevariousmilitaryleaders.HeissurprisedbyPixis'sannouncementthattheyshouldsurrendertoErenandbeginnegotiationswhileignoringthedeathsofZacklyandtheothervictims.JeanasksifHangebelievesitisagoodideathattheyshouldtrustErenandZekeandHangedisagreeswithPixis'sassessment.[144] Whileinconfinement,JeanquestionsArminonwhyErenwouldattackhimandisbaffledtohearitisbecauseErenverballyattackedMikasa.However,JeanisskepticalErenwouldcommitsuchanactunlesshehadanulteriormotive.TheconversationisinterruptedbytheAnti-MarleyanVolunteers.JeanquicklyaccusesYelenaofwantingtouseEldiatogetrevengeforherhomelandbutiscutoffbyGriezwhobeginstoslandertheEldians.Yelenarespondsbyshootinghimmuchtothesurpriseoftheprisoners.ShethengoesontodenythepreviousallegationbeforeexplainingZeke'seuthanizationplan.[150]However,JeanisunconvincedsinceEldiawillbeeventuallybecomedefenselessbutYelenainsiststheFoundingTitanwillstillbeadeterrent.Theyaretheninterruptedbyamessengerinformingthemaboutacapturedinfiltrator.[151]AsYelenaandtheAnti-MarleyanVolunteersleavetodealwiththeissue,Jeanandtherestoftheprisonershearacommotionontheroof,realizingthattheTitanshavestartedtomove.[152] JeanpunchesReinerinrage Beforethetwocanargueanyfurther,theyareinterruptedbyHange,whoservesdinnertoallofthesoldiers.However,YelenacausesevenmorefrictionbyremindingJeanthatMarcowaskilledbyAnnie.ReinerdefendsAnnie,revealingtoJeanthatheorderedMarco'sdeathtoprotecthisandBertolt'sidentities.AlthoughJeanrestrainshimselfinitially,hefliesintoaragewhenReinerattemptstoapologizeforwhathedidandsavagelybeatshim.HeisonlystoppedbyGabi,whophysicallyshieldsReinerfromJean'sattacks.[163]GabiapologizesforthecrimesthattheWarriorshavecommittedandbegstheSurveyCorpstohelpsavetheworld. ThefollowingdayasthegroupistravelingtoParadis'sharbor,JeanapologizestoGabiforaccidentallyhurtingherandreiteratestoReinerthathedoesnotintendtoforgivehimforwhathehasdone.[164]TheyarrivetofindthattheharborhasalreadybeenoccupiedbyYeagerists.[165]AsthegroupgearsupforaconfrontationAnniesuggestslaunchinganall-outattackandMikasaremindsherthattheycannotriskgettingtheAzumabitokilledinthecrossfire.Thegroupgearsupforapossibleengagement,butJeanandhisfriendsarereluctanttofighttheirformercomrades.TheirdiscussionisinterruptedbyHangewhoannouncestoeveryone'shorrorthatEren'sColossusTitanshaveapparentlyalreadyreachedMarley. ThegroupbeginsaplantotrytotricktheYeageristsintohandingovertheAzumabitomechanicswithoutafight,withJeanonstandbywithHangeandMagathincasefightingerupts.WhentheYeageristsarealertedtotheirpresence,JeanhelpsescorttheAzumabitotothebasementofthebuildingtheyarebeingheldinsothattheywillbesafefromtheimpendingbattle.[166] Whileshelteredthemechanicsinformthegroup,totheirhorror,thatitwilltakeatleasthalfadaytopreptheflyingboatforlaunch.JeanishorrifiedtolearnthattheywillnotbeabletosaveLiberiobutKiyomisuggeststhattheycouldgettheflyingboatreadyfasterifitwasbroughttoOdiha.Whilethemechanicsgototheboat,Jeanuseshisrifletogivethemandhisalliescoveringfirefromvariouspointsonthebattlefield.Oncetheboatisreadytodeparttheharbor,JeanandConniehelpcarryaninjuredReinerontotheboat.[167] Onboardtheship,JeanandMikasaareseenholdingbackAnnie,whoisindistress,afterHangerevealsthatLiberiocannotbesavedfromtherumblinganymore.[168] Atsomepoint,ErenpullsJeanandtherestofhisfriendsintoPathsindividuallyinordertospeakwitheachofthem.Herevealshistrueintentions,tohavehisfriendskillhimsothattheoutsideworldwillbeindebtedtothem,andwipestheirmemoriessothattheywillnotrememberanythinghehasrevealeduntilafterhisdeath.[169] AfterarrivinginOdiha,Jeanhelpsbringtheflyingboatinsideahangartobeworkedon.Hetriestoremovetheexplosivesfromtheship,butArminrecommendskeepingthemincasetheyareneededinthefuture. Aspreparationsontheflyingboatreachcompletion,Jeanandtheothersoldiersequiptheirmaneuveringgear.PreparationsareinterruptedbyFloch,whoarrivesinthehangarandshootsholesintheboat'sfueltankbeforebeingmortallywoundedbyMikasa.Asthemechanicstrytorepairtheboat,JeanchecksonFloch,andisleftdistressedbyafinalrequestfromFlochtostoppursuingEren. TheconversationisinterruptedwhenthegroupissuddenlypulledintoPathsbyEren.JeantriestoconvinceErentoendtheRumblingandletthemfigureoutwhattodonext,butErenrefusestostoptheRumbling.SeeingEreninthedistanceJean,Mikasa,Armin,andConnietrytoreachhimbutareunabletogetanyclosertohim.EreninformsthegroupthathecalledthemintoPathstoletthemknowthattheywillhavetokillhimtostoptheRumbling,beforesendingthembacktotheflyingboat.[171] AstheflyingboatreachesErenitcomesunderfirefromtheBeastTitan.JeanandhiscomradesjumpfromtheboatandusetheirmaneuveringgeartoevadetheBeast'sprojectilesbeforeengagingitdirectly.[172]TheyquicklydefeattheBeast,butfindthatZekeisnotinsideitsnape.RealizingthattheyhavenotimetosearchEren'sentireTitanforZeke,JeanconvincesArmintotransformintohisColossusTitanandusetheexplosiontotrytouncoverZeke'slocation.Jeanandhiscomradesbegintoretreat,butturntoseeArminbeingabductedbyanarmyofTitanswhichhasbegungeneratingatopEren.TheyarequicklyswarmedbytheTitansandJeannoticesthattheTitansseemtobecoordinatingtheirattacks.JeansavesReinerfromaTitanattackandisnearlyeatenhimself,onlybeingsavedatthelastminutebyLevi.LeviordershissquadtofocusonrecoveringArmin. TheydonotmakeitfarbeforeBertoltHoover'sColossusTitanappearsandattacksReiner.JeanmanagestorescueReinerfromhisTitanbeforeheiseaten,buttheColossusTitanthrowsReiner'sTitanatthegroupandtheyareknockedoffErenbytheimpact.JeanandReinerarelefthangingofftheTitanwithbothoftheirequipmenttoodamagedtobeusedanyfurther.JeanrefusestoletReinergoandadmitsthattheynolongerhaveanychanceofwinningandencouragesReinertokeepfightingwhiletheyarestillalive.Beforethegroupcanbedevoured,theyaresavedfromtheTitansbythearrivalofFalco,whohaslearnedtoflyusinghisJawTitan.[173] AtopFalco'sTitan,LevidecidesthatthegroupwillhavetosplituptosimultaneouslydetonatetheexplosivesonEren'snapeandsaveArmin.Mikasatriestoprotest,butJeanandtheothersregretfullyinsistthatkillingErenistheironlyoptionleft.AsFalcoreturnstoEren'sTitan,JeanisdiscouragedtoheargunfirefromFortSalta,suggestingthattheEldiansandMarleyanshavebegunfightingeachotheragain.ReachingErenoncemore,JeanandReinerchoosetoattackEren'snapethemselveswhiletheircomradespursueArmin. ReineruseshisTitantoholdofftheWarHammerTitanswhichhavebeengeneratedwhileJeantriestorushtoEren'snape,butmoreTitansbeginappearingtocutJeanoff.PieckmakesatimelyreappearanceandJeanusesherdistractiontogetcloser,butheonceagainfindshimselfblockedbythedozensofTitanswhichcontinuespawning.[174]SeeingthatPieckhasbeeninjured,JeanuseshismaneuveringgeartotrytoretreatwithhertoReiner,onlytofindReineratthemercyoftheWarHammerTitans.TheyareambushedbytwootherTitans,butaresavedbytheinterventionofMarcelandPorcoGalliard'sJawTitans.AsReinerandtheirnewfoundalliesholdofftheTitans,JeanisfinallyabletoreachtheexplosivesattachedtoEren'snape.Reluctantly,JeansetsofftheexplosivesandseversEren'sheadfromhisTitan'sbody. ToJean'shorror,acentipedeemergesfromEren'snapeandattemptstoreattachtohim,butReinerfliespasthimandmanagestostopit.Jean'salliesarrivetoevacuatewithhimsoArmincantransform.JeanisreluctanttoleaveReiner,butisconvincedbyPiecktodoso.[175] ThegroupreturnstoFortSalta.TheyarerelievedtoseethatReinersurvivedtheexplosion,butJeanandhiscompanionsareleftunsurprisedwhenErenandthecentipedealsoemergealive.ThegroupreluctantlydecidesthattheywillneedtoprioritizekillingErenoverthecentipede,butbeforetheycandepartthecentipedebeginsemittingsmokeintothefort.RealizingthatthesmokeisgoingtotransformtheEldiansinthefortintoTitans,JeanandConnieareforcedtostaybehindinthefortwhileFalco,PieckandtheAckermansdeparttofinishEren.Astheywatchtheircompanionsdepart,JeanmusesthatheandConniearegoingtohavetoentrusttheiralliestofinishthejobforthem.Astheyareabouttotransform,ConniejokesthatitisJean'sfaultthattheywereburdenedwiththejobofsavingtheworldsincehewastheonewhoconvincedthemtojointheSurveyCorps. TheEldiansinFortSlavaalltransformandimmediatelygotoprotectthecentipedeasitattemptstoreturntoEren.[176] FollowingEren'sdeath,thePoweroftheTitansiseliminatedfromtheworldandalloftheEldiansreturntotheirhumanforms.RecoveringhismemoriesofhisfinalconversationwithEren,Jeanmournsforhisfriend.AstheEldiansregroup,thesurvivingMarleyansoldiersfromSaltacomeouttoconfrontthem.TheMarleyansthreatentokillthemiftheycannotprovethattheyarenolongerTitans,andonlyArminisabletotalkthemdown.
