Thehardwaresubscription,whichwouldallowcustomerstoacquireiPhonesandotheritemsfromAppleforamonthlyfee,hasfloatedaroundinrumorsforawhile,buthasyettobecomeareality.WhileApplehadanopportunitytointroducesuchaserviceduringitsiPhone14event,itmaystillmakeanappearanceinthecomingweeks,areportclaims.
Appleissupposedlythoughttobe"activelytesting"theservice,accordingtoMarkGurman's"PowerOn"newsletterforBloombergonSunday.Whilebeingtested,Gurmansayshestillexpectsit"tolauncheitherlaterthisyearornextyear."
Theproposedsubscriptionwasn'tannouncedormentionedduringtheiPhoneeventinorderto"reducelaunchdaycomplexity,"sinceitwouldbean"entirelynewwaytobuyaniPhone."
GiventheexpectationofanOctobereventforiPadandMaclaunches,therecouldbeahighchanceApplecouldusethatpresentationasavenueforasubscriptionlaunch.
Applealreadyoffersanumberofdirectwayscustomerscangetthelatestflagships,includingtheiPhoneUpgradeProgramandinstallmentprograms,likeAppleCard.However,thesubscriptionwoulddifferascustomerswouldn'tjustpayaportionofthehardwarecost,butalsoforasuiteofservicesontop.
Forexample,GurmansaysAppleOnebundlescouldaddinhardwareaspartofthemonthlycost,enablingcustomerstogetcoreAppleservicesstraightaway.It'salsoplausibleforAppletorollinAppleCare+aspartofthesameall-encompassingpackage.
Gurman'spredictionsofalate2022orearly2023launchofthesubscriptionechosimilarstatementshemadeinMarch.However,rumorsofanall-in-onesubscriptionareactuallyafewyearsold,withanalystsbelievingittobeaninevitabilityforApple.
Itisalsothoughtthatahardwaresubscriptioncouldbebeneficialtoinvestors,sinceitwouldshiftthenarrativeawayfromseasonalone-timetransactionstooneofreoccurringsales.

I’mnotsurehowthiswillbemuchdifferentamodelfromthecurrentiPhoneUpgradeprogram:underthat,youpaymonthlyandhavetheoptiontoupgradetothelatestphoneeveryyear.Itispossibletorefusetheupgradeandcontinuepayinguntilyouactuallyownit,butIdoubtmorethanasmallpercentageofpeopleinthatprogramusethatoption,soinessenceyou’repayingforeverfortherighttohavethelatestiPhone.Sincenobodyseemstohaveaproblemwiththeexistingimplementation,justexpandittocovertheiDeviceorMacyouwant—ohwait,there’salreadyabuy-now-pay-laterprogramforthoseitemsaswell(aslongasyouorderdirectlyfromApple).IIRC,thisincludesAppleCare+andisofferedwithzerointerestorfees,so…formanythiswouldbeamoreaffordablewaytogetthemachinethey’vealwayswanted,so…can’tquitefigureoutwhatelsethisprogram“intesting”wouldofferbeyondthis…
