IhavehadYosemiteinstalledonmy24″iMacbutfindthatithasbeengivingmerandomrebootfromtimetotime.Itiscompletelyrandomandveryfrustrating.AquicksearchonGooglesuggestthatIamnotaloneinthis.ItisunfortunatethatasupposedlystableOSbasedontheMachkernelcanbesosentimentalattimes.SointhemeantimeIhavedowngradedtoMavericktoenjoyamorestableenvironment.SothisarticleiswrittenwiththemainaimtodualbootMaverickandWindows1064bit.ElCapitanhasjustbeenreleasedandIwillbetryingthatinplaceofMaverick. Iftheinstallisnotsuccessful,wellatleastIhavetriedandfailed.ButIampleasedtosaythatallseemstogowell.Iamhappywiththeresult.TheiMacisnospeeddemonbutifyouarenotintogaming,IthinkWindows10performanceontheiMac2007isprettysnappy.HereishowIdidit. Step1–CreatingaBootableWindows1064bitDVD ItisassumedthatMaverickisalreadyinstalledontheMacandthatyouhaveaPCwithWindowshandy.Weneedtocreate abootableDVDusingWindows.ItispossibletodothesameontheMacbutIthinkitisaloteasiertodothisonaWindowsbox. Whyisthisnecessary?Well…ifyoudon’tremastertheWindows10ISOatthisstage,chancesarethatyouwon’tgetpassthe“SelectCD-ROMBootType”issue.ThiserrorwillpopupwhenyoutrytoboottheiMacfromthestockWindows10DVDandthislookslikethis: Thetroublewiththeaboveerroristhatthekeyboardisbeinglockedoutandyoucan’tpressanykey.SoweneedtocustomizetheinstallDVD.Thissoundsverycomplexbutisactuallyverysimple.ThewaytoremastertheWindows1064bitISOisthis: CreateatemporaryfoldersayC:\WIN1064withtheintenttoholdthecontenttothisISO.Trytokeepthenameshortandwithoutspaces.Itiseasiertodealwithshortnamesinacommandlinelater. OnWindows,doubleclicktheWindows1064bitISOtomountthisISO(oryoucanuseanyothersoftwareyouprefer,suchas7-ZIP).CopyallthecontentanddumpthewholelottoC:\WIN1064folder.Remembertopreserveallthesub-foldersandthelike. MovetheOSCDIMG.exefileyouhavedownloadedearlierto anothertemporaryfoldersuchas C:\TEMPfolder. StartawindowscommandpromptwithAdministrationrights.ChangethedirectorytoC:\TEMPfolder. Theaboveishowmypartitionslooklikebeforepreppingthesystemforwindows10.ItcanalsobeobservedthatthereisahiddenEFIpartitionthatisotherwisenotvisible. Itisimportant tonotethatIhaveaverysimplepartitioningschemeonmyiMac.Soifyouhaveacomplicatedsetup,thenthistutorialmayormaynotworkforyou. IdeallyIwouldliketoreserveatleast128GBforWindows10butIwilluse100GBfornow.UsuallyIwillcreateaWindowsOSpartition+aDatapartitiononmyPCboxesbutIdecidedthatIamgoingtojustkeepthingssimplefornow.SotheOS+Datagoontoonebigpartitionatthisstage.Ihavemostof mydata storedonaNASanywaysothisisnotaproblemforme. ThiswillallowustoselectwhetherwearegoingtobootfromtheSSDortobootfromtheDVD.SelecttheWindowsDVD.Windows10willnowbootandweshouldnowseetheWindows10logoonthescreen.Beawarethatthebootprocesstakesalongtimesowhileitmayappearthatthesystemhashung,itisnot.Itisjustveryslow.Afteraboutaminuteor2later,wewillnowseethefirstsetupscreen. WewantedtoinstallWindows10onDisk0Partition4butWindowswillstatethefollowingerrormessage“Windowscan’tbeinstalledonDrive0Partition4.” Ignorethisandwhilethispartitionisselected,click“Format”andformatthepartition.Whentheformatisdone,theerrormessagewillgoawayandWindows10canproceedtoinstallingnormally. Fromhereon,theinstallationistypicalofanyWindows10PCinstall.   Atsomestageoftheinstallation,Windows10willautomaticallyreboot.Thisisfine.NoneedtopresstheOptionkeyasit issmartenoughtoknowthatitshouldbootfromitsownwindowspartition.Infact,IobservedthatWindows10rebootedtwiceintotalbeforeitshowsthescreenpromptingforaproductkey.Entertheproductkeyaccordingly. TheabovescreenshotshowsthatWindows10hasdetectedthedisplaycardasanATIMobilityRadeonHD2600XT.TheiMac2007hasanATIRadeon2600Prowith256MBGDDR3memory.Whyisthissignificant?Becausewiththeincorrectdriver,Windows10willhardcrashfromtimetotimeandthiscanbereproducedeachtimeeasilywhenwedrivethecardhardsuchasplayingayoutubevideoforinstance.ThisgetssobadthatitisalmostimpossibletousetheiMacforanylengthoftime.
