TipsandtricksfortroubleshootingadrivethatisnotdetectedinMyComputerorWindowsExplorer.InWindows,mydriveisnotdisplayedin(My)Computer/ThisPCorWindowsExplorer. NewinternalSeagatebranddrivesarenotpartitionedorformattedfromthefactory. Onlyexternaldrivesaresoldpre-formatted. Ifyouradditionaldriveisneworcompletelyerased,thentobevisiblein(My)Computer/ThisPC,itmustbepartitioned.InWindowsyoumayusetheDiskManagementUtilitytopartitionthedrive.Hereistheorderofactions,andwewillexpandonthesebelow.
• Connectandinstallsecondarydrive.• BootintoWindows.• OpenComputerManagementandselectDiskManagement.• Initialize,PartitionandFormatthedrive.
Note:EventhoughyoucanseethedriveinDiskManagementitwillnotbevisibleinWindowsExploreruntilithasbeeninitializedandpartitioned.
Initializingandpartitioningadrive:
1. OnyourkeyboardpresstheWindowskey()+R2. Typecompmgmt.mscandpressenter.3. TheComputerManagementwindowwillopen.4. ChooseDiskManagementundertheStoragecategory.
Note:WindowswillnormallyseetheuninitializeddrivewhenyouopenDiskManagementandstartthewizardtoinitializethediskforyou.Incasethe“InitializeDisk”wizarddoesn’tstartyoumayfollowtheinstructionstomanuallyinitializeyourdisk:
5. Right-clickontheDiskthatneedstobeinitialized.6. FromthemenuselectInitializeDisk.
7. Selecttheappropriatepartitionstyle,MBRorGPT.
Note:TheMBRPartitionscandefineadiskdrivecapacityupto2.2TB.WindowsoperatingsystemsthatbootfromanMBRarethereforelimitedto2.2TBperMBR.TheMBRPartitionscandefineadiskdrivecapacityupto2.2TB.WindowsoperatingsystemsthatbootfromanMBRarethereforelimitedto2.2TBperMBR.GUIDPartitionTables(GPT)candefinedriveslargerthan2.2TB.
8. Oncethediskisinitialized,thepartitionwillshowUnallocated.9. Right-clicksomewhereontheUnallocatedpartition.10. FromthemenuselectNewSimpleVolume.
11. TheNewSimpleVolumeWizardwillprompt.12. ClickNext.13. SpecifyPartitionsizeinMBandclickNext.
Note: Ifyouwanttocreatemultiplepartitions,changetheSimplevolumesizeinMBtothesizeofthepartitionyou'dliketocreate.
14. AssignaDriveLetterthenclickNext.15. Specifytheformattingoptionsyouwanttouse:
• FileSystem• Volumelabel
16. ClickNext.
17. Confirmthattheoptionsselectedarecorrect,andthenclickFinish.18. OnceyouhaveclickedontheFinishbutton,theNewPartitionWizardwillclose.Inafewseconds,the"Unallocated"partitionwillsay"Formatting".Whenthedrivehascompletedformattingitwilldisplayasahealthydrivewiththesizeandtypeofpartitionbelowthevolumenameanddriveletter.

Mostlegacysystemsbuiltbefore2011haveatraditionalPCBIOS.ThistypeofBIOSusesaMasterBootRecord(MBR).TheMBRPartitionscandefineadiskdrivecapacityupto2.2TB.WindowsoperatingsystemsthatbootfromanMBRarethereforelimitedto2.2TBperMBR.A3TBdiskdriveinalegacyBIOSandWindowsystemwillneedaDiscWizarddevicedrivertoaccessthefullcapacityofa3TBdiskdrive.TwopartitionswillbenecessarybecauseoftheMBRlimitation.Thedevicedrivermountsthecapacityabove2.2TBwithanotherMBRwhichlookstothesystemasasecondvirtual“physical”device.GUIDPartitionTables(GPT)candefinedriveslargerthan2.2TB.YoucanuseGPTtodayonanyWindows10/8/7andVistasystemasanon-bootingdatadrive.WindowscanonlybootaGPTpartitiononanewtypeofBIOScalledUEFI.UEFIBIOSdesktopsystemsarenewsince2011.Windows10/8/7andVista64-bitoperatingsystemssupportbootingfromUEFIandGPTwithouttheneedofanon-Microsoftdevicedriver.ThisistheWindowsnativesolutionforbootinga3TBdrivetoasinglepartition.
