ThereasonforformingaGermanclassificationsocietywastoachievetransparency.Merchants,shipowners,andinsurersusedtogetlittleinformationaboutthestateofaship.Asanindependentclassificationsociety,GermanischerLloydwascreatedtoevaluatethequalityofshipsanddelivertheresultstoshipowners,merchants,andinsurers. FirstclassificationswerebasedonconstructionrulesdevelopedbyFriedrichSchüler,ashipbuilderfromStettin-Grabow,Prussia(latertheGermanEmpire).GL'sfirstinternationalshipclassificationregisterfrom1868reports273classedships–26ofthemunderaforeignflag.In1877,tentimesmoreclassedshipswereregistered.Asaconsequence,thesurveyornetworkextendedrapidly.By1869,GLhadsurveyorsinadozenGermanseaportsandoutsideGermanyinStPetersburg,Copenhagen,London,Liverpool,Amsterdam,Istanbul,Swatow,Amoy,Penang,andSingapore. Ironandsteamshipsbecamemoreandmorepopular,slowlyreplacingwoodensailingvessels.Afteryearsofeconomicdifficulties,ImperialChancellorBismarcktookchargeofthesituationbyannouncingacommission.Itsadvice:Theassociationoughttoturnintoapubliccompany.Thechangewasfinalisedatageneralassemblywhichtookplaceon5October1889. In1894astheeconomicsituationimproved,GermanischerLloyddecidedtoextenditsservicebyteamingupwiththeGermanmaritimeauthoritySee-Berufsgenossenschaft [de](SeeBG),whichwasfoundedin1887.WhiletheSeeBGissuedrulesforaccidentpreventionandcheckedfortheircompliance,GLprovidedsupportastechnicaladviser.Thecollaborationbetweenbothpartieshaslasteduntiltoday. Asaclassificationsociety,GermanischerLloydhasalwaysfocusedonshipsafety.TheimportanceofthesubjectbecameclearwiththeTitanicdisasterin1912.Twoyearslater,aGLdirectorattendedthe"Titanic"conferenceasarepresentativeoftheGermangovernment.Atthispoint,10percentoftheworld'smerchantfleetwasclassedbyGermanischerLloyd.TheFirstWorldWar,however,wasasevereset-back. Internationalrelationshipswerediscontinuedandforeignshipschangedclass.Afterthewarthingsstartedtoimproveagain.By1939,theregistercontained4.7 millionGRT(grossregistertons).ThentheSecondWorldWarleftitsmark:theheadquarterswasdestroyed,officesbombedout,andoverseasagencieslost.Mostfileswereabolishedorconfiscated.TheAlliedControlCouncileventuallyallowedadvocatesfromtheshipping,shipbuilding,andshipinsuranceindustrytoobtainatemporarylicenceforthecompany;itbecamepermanentin1948.Followingthewar,Germany'seconomicrecoveryledtorapiddevelopment:withinsevenyearstheclassedtonnageincreasedfrom400,000tothreemillionGT. Thecompanycontinuedtogrow.Large-capacitycomputersenabledthedesignandconstructionofbiggerandmoremodernships.Containershipsweredevelopedtosatisfytheincreasingconsumerdemandforgoods.Theseopenvesselswerealotmorevulnerabletotorsionandaparticularchallengefordesignengineers.GLinvestedinresearchresultinginnewconstructionrulesforcontainerships. Atthebeginningofthe1970s,offshoretechnologybecameanimportantfieldofactivityforGermanischerLloyd.In1973,workingonbehalfoftheGermanFederalMinistryofResearchandTechnology,thesocietysurveyedtheconstructionoftheresearchplatform“NorthSeaandsuperviseditsinstallationtothenorth-westoftheGermanislandHelgoland.GLwasalsoinvolvedintheinstallationofthefirstGermanoilproductionplatforms“Mittelplate,locatedintheWaddenSea,andSchwedeneck,locatedintheBalticSeaattheGermanBightoffKiel,Germany.Manyotheroffshoretechnologyprojectsfollowedandtheworkcontinuestoday[when?]. In1977,windenergywasintroducedasanewbusinesssegment.Thisdiversification,originallystartedinthe1960s,preventedthesocietyfrombeingseverelyaffectedbytheshipbuildingcrisisinthefirsthalfofthe1980s. Intheautumnof2006,FrenchrivalBureauVeritaslaunchedahostiletakeoverbidbutthiswasdefeatedthroughthesupportofHamburg-basedentrepreneurGünterHerz.[3]Subsequently,100%ofthesharesofthecompanyhadbeenacquiredbytheHerzfamilyofficeMayfair.
