You can change the size of images to reduce or enlarge them. The image size can be set using pixels or a print unit, such as inches or centimeters. Ifyouareworkingonanimagefortheweboronethatwillonlybedisplayedonascreen,youshouldsizeandresizeimagesusingpixels(andyoucanignoretheResolutionsettingcompletely).Ifyouareworkingonanimagethatwillbeprinted,youshoulduseprintunitswithanappropriateresolution. Whenresizingimages,youcanalsochoosefromfourimagescalingalgorithms,includingthemachinelearning-poweredMLSuperResolution(availableonmacOS10.14andlater). Changethepixeldimensionsofanimage Dooneofthefollowing: ChooseImage>ImageSize(fromtheImagemenuatthetopofyourscreen). PressOption⌥+Command⌘+Ionyourkeyboard. ChoosepixelsfromtheUnitpop-upmenu. Enteranewwidthandheightfortheimage. Note:Ifyou’dliketoresizetheimagewithoutkeepingitsoriginalproportions,deselecttheScaleproportionallycheckbox. ClickOKtoapplyyourchangesorCanceltocancelthem. Note:Whenchangingthepixelsizeofanimage,theResolutionhasabsolutelynoeffectontheactualsizeorqualityoftheimage.Thestandardnumberusedis72or300,butthisisessentiallyplaceholdertextforanyimagesizedinpixels.Ifyouneedtochangetheprintsizeofanimage,seethesectionbelow. Whenyouchangetheprintdimensionsofanimage,you’reessentiallychangingitspixeldimensionsindirectlybylettingPixelmatorProcalculatethesizeforyou.ThebasicformulaforthisisPrintSizexResolution=PixelDimensions.So,ifyouhavea10x10inchimageat300PPI,itspixelsizewouldbe3000x3000. Note:Ifyou’dliketochangetheprintdimensionsofanimagewithoutchangingthequalityoftheimage(oritspixeldimensions),deselecttheResamplecheckbox.Thisway,changingtheresolutionwillautomaticallychangetheprintdimensionsandviceversa,ensuringthepixelsizeoftheimagestaysthesame.Notethatbecauseyou'llbechangingthephysicalsizeoftheimage,pixelsasmeasurementunitswillbegrayedout. ClickOKtoapplyyourchanges. Thestandardresolutionforhigh-qualityprintsis300pixels/inch(PPI),althoughalowerresolutionisoftenusedforlargerpostersandothermediathatisviewedfromadistancewhereitwouldbedifficulttoseeindividualpixels.Forwebgraphicsandimages,aresolutionof72PPIisoftenusedasthedefault,althoughthisisessentiallyplaceholdertextaswebimagesshouldalwaysbesizedinpixels. ChooseadifferentimagescalingalgorithmInPixelmatorPro,youcanresizeimagesusingoneoffourscalingalgorithms:Bilinear,Lanczos,NearestNeighbor,andMLSuperResolution. Selectthealgorithm: TheBilinearalgorithmismoreorlessthestandardinimageediting.Ittriestonaturallysmoothedges(transitionsbetweenlightanddarkcolors)byguessingtheintermediatecolors,soit'susefulforphotographicimages.However,thiscansometimescauseblurryimages(especiallywhenupscaling). TheLanczosalgorithmisdesignedtopreservesmalldetailswhenupscalinganddownscaling,whichisusefulforthingslikegraphics,thoughit'simportanttowatchoutforhaloingissues. TheNearestNeighboralgorithmismostlyusedforpixelart,asitcopiesthecolorofthenearestneighboringpixelsresultingintheclassicblockyimagelook.
