InstallingWindowsonanexternaldrivewouldbeagreatsolutiontotheproblemofavailablespace,butaswesaid,BootCampandWindowsimposearestrictiononinstallingtoanexternaldrive. Ordothey? ThereareactuallyafewwaysyoucansuccessfullyinstallWindowsonanexternaldrive.TheyrangefromcreatingclonesofanexistingPCinstallationorusingMicrosoftITtoolsforinstallingWindows.Butthemethodwe’regoingtooutlinehereisabitdifferent.ItallowsyoutoinstallWindowsonanexternaldrivewithoutfirsthavingWindowsinstalledonaPCorinavirtualenvironment. Thisisanadvancedprocesswithquiteafewpitfallsthatcantripyouup.Besuretoreadthroughtheprocessbeforeundertakingit.Also,makesureyouhaveacurrentbackupbeforebeginning. WhatYouNeedtoInstallBootCamponanExternalDrive 4GBorlargerUSBflashdrive.Bootableexternaldrive.We’reusingaUSB3.0drive,butaThunderboltdriveshouldworkaswell.BootCampWindowsSupportSoftware.VirtualBoxvirtualizationapp(availableforfree).AlicensedcopyofWindows10ISOoraninstallDVD.Wiredkeyboardandmouse.DuringtheWindowsinstallation,thedriversforApplewirelesskeyboardsandmicearen’tinstalleduntiltheveryendoftheprocess.Ifyou’renotusingaportableMacwithabuilt-inkeyboardandtrackpad,you’llneedawiredkeyboardandmousetocompletetheinstallation. PreparetheExternalDriveforInstallingWindows Theexternaldrivethatyou’llinstallWindowsonneedstobepreparedbyerasingandformattingthedriveforusewithWindows. Warning:Theerase,format,andpartitioningprocesswilldeletealldatacurrentlycontainedontheexternaldrive. LaunchBootCampAssistant,locatedat/Applications/Utilities.IntheBootCampAssistantwindowthatopens,clicktheContinuebutton.IntheSelectTaskswindow,removecheckmarksfrom“CreateaWindows7orlaterversioninstalldisk”and“InstallWindows7orlaterversion.”Ensurethecheckboxlabeled“DownloadthelatestWindowssupportsoftwarefromApple”ischecked,andthenclickContinue.SelectthedeviceyouwishtohavetheWindowssupportfilesinstalledon;thisshouldbetheUSBflashdriveyoupreparedearlier.Aftermakingyourselection,clickContinue.BootCampAssistantwilldownloadandinstalltheneededWindowssupportsoftwareontheselecteddevice.Oncetheinstallisnearlycomplete,you’llbeaskedtoprovideyouradministratorpasswordsotheBootCampAssistantcanchangethefilepermissionsontheUSBflashdrive.Provideyouradministratorpassword,andclickContinue. TheWindowssupportsoftwarehasbeeninstalledontheUSBflashdrive. UseVirtualBoxtoInstallWindowsontheExternalDrive Thisisthetrickypartoftheprocess,atleastinthesensethatwe’regoingtotrickBootCampandtheWindowsinstallerintothinkingyourexternaldriveisactuallyyourmaininternaldrive,orintheparlanceofWindows,yourC:drive. YoucouldperformthistrickybitofvirtualizationusingParallelsorVMwareFusion,butwe’regoingtouseVirtualBoxbecauseit’sfree.YoucandownloadtheappfromtheVirtualBoxwebsite. OnceyoudownloadandinstallVirtualBox,we’rereadytobegintheinstallationprocess. MostofthevirtualizationtrickerywillbeperformedfromwithinTerminal,sogoaheadandlaunchTerminal,locatedat/Applications/Utilities. Youcanfindtheexternaldrivebylookingforthename,type,orifthisisyouronlyexternal,bythelocation[external,physical] WiththeexternaldriveyouformattedforinstallingWindowsonconnectedtoyourMac,enterthefollowingTerminalcommandwithoutthequotationmarks:“diskutillist”andthenpressenterorreturn.AlistofallattacheddiskswillbedisplayedinTerminal.ScrollthroughthelistandlocatetheexternaldriveyouplanonusingtoinstallWindows.Ifyoufollowedoursuggestionearlier,itwillbenamedWIN10andbeofthetypeDOS_FAT_32.Onceyoulocatetheexternaldrive,makeanoteofitsIdentifier.TheIdentifierappearsinthelastcolumnandwillhavetheformatoftheword“disk”followedbyanumber.Inourcase,theidentifierisdisk4.Nowthatweknowthediskidentifier,weneedtoejectthedisksoit’snolongerconnectedlogicallytotheMac(itwillstillbeconnectedphysically).LocatetheWIN10diskonyourDesktoporintheFinderwindowsidebar.Right-clickontheWIN10diskandselectEjectfromthepopupmenu. UseVirtualBoxtoMaptheExternalDrivetoaVirtualBoxDisk ThenextstepintheprocessistomaptheexternaldrivetoaVirtualBoxdisk. TheWindowsVMyoucreateusesavirtualizedconnectiontoyourexternaldrive. InorderforVirtualBoxtobeabletoaccesstheexternaldrive,weneedtolaunchVirtualBoxwithelevatedpermissions.Onceagain,weturntoTerminal. InstallWindowsonYourExternalDriveViaVirtualBox StarttheinstallationprocessbyclickingtheStartbuttonintheVirtualBoxtoolbox.TheWindows10installationwillstart.FollowtheonscreeninstructionsuntilyoucometotheWindowsSetupscreenwiththeheading“Whichtypeofinstallationdoyouwant?”Selectthe“Custom:InstallWindowsonly(advanced)”option.TheWindowssetupwilldisplaythecurrentlyavailabledrivesandpartitionsthatWindowscanbeinstalledon.BecausetheexternalharddrivehasbeenassignedtotheVirtualBoxmachine,itistheonlydrivethatwillbelisted.WhenweusedDiskUtilitytoformatthedrive,wechoseMS-DOS(FAT),whichisincompatiblewithWindows10.WedidthisbecauseDiskUtilitycan’tformatwithNTSF,buttheWindowsinstallerwouldrecognizeMS-DOS.Allweneedtodonowischangethedrive’sformattoNTSF.Selectthedrive,andthenclicktheFormatbutton.Waituntiltheformatiscomplete(theNextbuttonwillbecomeavailable),andthenclickNext.TheWindowsinstallationwillstart,withfilesbeingcopiedtotheexternaldrive.Warning:Anextremelyimportantstepfollows…Whenyouseethemessage“Windowsneedstorestart”immediatelyshutdownthevirtualmachinebyclickingontheredclosebuttononthewindow.Select“Poweroffthemachine”fromthelistofoptions,andthenclickOKtopoweroffthevirtualmachine. WindowsSetupwillinstalltheneededfilestoyourexternaldrive.BesuretopreventWindowsSetupfromautomaticallyrestarting. Atthispoint,theWindowsinstallerhascopiedallthefilestotheexternaldrive,andhassetupabootenvironmentthatyoucanstartyourMacfrom.Nexttimeyoubootfromtheexternaldrive,Windowswillcompletetheinstallationprocess. RestartYourMacWiththeExternalWindowsDrive Closeanyappsyoumayhaveopen,thenrestartyourMac.HolddowntheOptionkeyduringtherestart.ThiswillcausetheMac’sStartupManagertodisplayalistofdrivesyoucanstartfrom.UsethearrowkeysonyourkeyboardtoselecttheWindowsdrive.YourMacwillbootfromtheexternalWindowsdrive.Thebootupprocesscantakeawhile,sobepatient.Windowswillfinishtheinstallprocess.Atsomepointduringtheinstallation,WindowswillrestartyourMac.Whenitdoes,yourMacwillrestartwiththenormalMacOS.YouneedtobepresenttoholddowntheOptionkeyandselectWindowstostartfrom.WindowswillfinishtheinstallationandpresentyouwiththeWindowsdesktop. GettingAppleHardwareWorkingUnderWindows TheUSBflashdriveyouusedearliertomaketheWindowsSupportsoftwarecontainsallthedriversyouneedtoinstallinWindowsfortheApplehardwaretowork. TocompletetheWindowsinstallation,runtheBootCampSetupapptoinstalltheneededAppledrivers.
