Policeandprosecutorsalsosaidtwoundergroundfactorieswerebustedonsuspicionofsellingprocessedwasteoils–collectedfromcookers,fryers,andgreasetraps–includingtoonethatsuppliedleadingfoodoilmanufacturerChangGuannCo.Anotherfactoryallegedlyrecycledgreasefromleatherprocessingplantsforoilsusedinanimalfeeds. OfficialssaidthatChangGuannthensoldtheoilsontoatleast235companies,includinganumberofleadingbrands,aslard-basedcookingoils.TheyincludefoodgiantsWeiChuan,ChiMei,andTaiwanSugar. Theinvestigationwaslaunchedafterpolicereceivedtip-offsthatwasteoilswerebeingcollectedfromrestaurantsandfoodstands,processed,andthenre-sold.Healthauthoritiesareinvestigatingallthefirmsthatmayhavesoldorusedthetaintedmaterialintheirproducts.ChangGuannhasapologizedbutsaiditwasunawarethattheoilswererecycledsoittoowasavictiminthecase.Thecompanysaidithadboughtatotalof243metrictonsoftheoilsinceitfirststartedpurchasingfromthefactoryinFebruary. WeiChuanFoodsCorp,theTaiwaneseunitofTingHsinInternationalGroup,whichownstheMasterKonginstantnoodlebrand,saidithasrecalled12typesofproductssuchasmeatpasteandporkflosssincelateThursdayforallegedlycontainingtherecycledoils. “WedeeplyregretthatthisincidenthascausedpublicuneasinessandwereservealllegalrightsagainstChangGuann…Wewillcooperatewiththeauthoritiesininspections,”WeiChuanFoodssaidinastatement.Thecompanyestimatedalossof$79.4millionTaiwanDollarsfromrecallinganddisposingofproductsinstorage. Sofartheauthoritieshaveseized49metrictonsofsuspectedrecycledoilfromChangGuannafterinspectingthecompanyonThursdayandhasorderedallcompaniesitsuppliestorecallproductsthatmaycontainthetaintedoils,accordingtothehealthministry. Buttheauthoritiesfearsomeofthetaintedoilmayhavegonetosnackshopsandnightmarkets,whichwouldbehardtotrack. Policearenowinvestigatingifthetaintedfoodproductshavebeensoldoverseas. Ifchargesarebrought,theculpritscouldfacefraudchargesaswellasafineof$50millionTaiwanDollarsforviolatingfoodsafetylaw. ThelatestcasewasthesecondfoodscandaltohitTaiwaninlessthanayear.InNovember2013,WeiChuanandothercompanieswereorderedbytheauthoritiestorecalltensofthousandsofbottlesoftaintedcookingoilitpurchasedfromChangchiFoodstuffFactory. InDecember2013,thefactoryownerwassentencedto16yearsinprisonforsellingoliveoiladulteratedwithcottonseedoilandbannedcoloringagentcopperchlorophyllin.
