Foralmosttwodecades,AmericansraisedtheirrighthandsandcommittedtoserveanddefendourConstitutionasuniformedmembersoftheUnitedStatesArmedForcesduringatumultuousperiodinourcountry’shistory. ThroughouttheyearsoftheVietnamWar,9millionAmericansearnedthetitleofUnitedStatesveteran. Todayandeveryday,wehonortheirbraveryandcommitmentandgivethankstoagenerationofAmericanswhovaliantlyfoughtinserviceofthecountrytheylovewhilerecognizingthecontinuingimpactonsomanyveteransoftheVietnamconflict,alongwiththeirfamilies,caregivers,andsurvivors. Wewillalwaysrememberthosewelostandhonorthosewhocamehome. In2012,ourNationlauncheda13-yearlongcommemorationofthe50thanniversaryoftheVietnamWartoensurethateveryveteran,family,caregiver,andsurvivorimpactedbythedifficultyearsinVietnamfeelsourNation’sgratitudefortheirsacrifice. EveryservicememberoftheVietnamgenerationshouldknowthattheirsacrificesmatteredandthattheirservicemadeadifference. ThenamesetchedinTheWallattheVietnamVeteransMemorialremindusofourlovedoneswhogavetheirallandnevercamehome. Tothefamilies,caregivers,andsurvivorsofthemorethan58,000servicememberswhosenamesarememorializedintheblackgranite,wepledgetoneverforgettheeternalsacrificeofyourlovedones andwhatyouhavesacrificedfortheNation. Tothefamiliesoftheover1,500servicememberswhoremainmissingandunaccountedfor,knowthatourNation’seffortstobringthemhomewillneverstop. WepledgeoursteadfastcareandsupporttoourVietnamveterans,aswedoforallofourveterans. Wewillhonorour sacredobligationtoyouandyourfamily. Andtoeachofthe6millionVietnamWareraveteranswhoarewithustoday,wehonoryourserviceandallthatyouhavedoneforourNation. NOW,THEREFORE,I,JOSEPHR.BIDENJR.,PresidentoftheUnitedStatesofAmerica,byvirtueoftheauthorityvestedinmebytheConstitutionandthelawsoftheUnitedStates,doherebyaffirmthisNation’scommitmenttocommemoratethe50thAnniversaryoftheVietnamWar,whichbeganonMemorialDay,May 28,2012,andwhichwillcontinuethroughVeteransDay,November 11,2025. IcalluponallAmericanstoseekoutandextendtheNation’sprofoundgratitudetoeachofourVietnamveteransandtheirfamiliesandcaretakersduringpublicceremoniesandprogramsthroughoutthecountry,whileexpressingdeepcompassionforthefamiliesofthefallen,thosewhoremainmissingandunaccountedfor,andallotherswhoservedyetnolongerwalkamongus.
