Weexploredalotofwaysoftryingtohaveafluidcameramovementthatwasn'taSteadicammove.HeshowedmeafilmearlyoncalledAngst ...HewantedtotryandinstillthatinthewayweshotTheFavourite,butitwasgoingtobereallydifficulttodothat.Becauseofthecostumesandjustthephysicalityofit,itwasnotgoingtobepossible.Sowetriedtocomeupwithwaysofbeingasfluidaswecouldwiththecamera.Thatwasexcitingbecausewecameupwithsomeinterestingrigs—weexploreddifferentgimbalrigsandthingslikethat.[36] LanthimosencouragedRyantousefisheyeandwide-anglelensesforamajorityoftheshots,whichRyanbelievedcontributedsignificantlytothestory:Thewidelensistwofold.Byshowingyouthewholeroomandalsoisolatingthecharacterinasmallspace ...yougetafeelingofnoescape.Ithinkoneofthecritiquesofthefilmbelieveditwaslikeaplaygroundthatturnsintoabattlegroundthatturnsintoaprison.Ithinkthat'saverygoodexplanationofwhatthefilmtriestogetacrosswiththesecharacters.Ithinkthewidelensesareprettyintegraltothat,aswell.[36]
