Thegroup'soriginalmembers,DavidSinclair,RichardSinclair,PyeHastingsandRichardCoughlanhadallbeenintheCanterbury-basedWildeFlowers,albeitnotatthesametime.RichardSinclairhadbeenanearlymember,butleftinSeptember1965tostudyatcollege.[2]HastingshadreplacedRobertWyattasthegroup'ssingerandCoughlanasdrummerinthebandwhenWyatt,whoperformedbothroles,formedSoftMachine.[3]DavidSinclairjoinedthegroupinlate1966,butafterfutureSoftMachinememberHughHopperleftthegroupinJunethefollowingyear,theybegantorunoutofmomentumandbrokeupinOctober1967.[4] Caravanhadstartedtobuildalivefollowingbymid-1970,includinganappearanceattheKralingenPopFestivalintheNetherlandstoanaudienceof250,000andthe10thPlumptonFestival.Inautumn1970,Caravanbeganworkingononeoftheirmostcriticallyacclaimedalbums,IntheLandofGreyandPink(1971).Thebalanceofsongwritingchangedfromtheprevioustwoalbums,withRichardSinclairtakingamoreprominentrole.Hissong,"GolfGirl"wasoriginallywrittenabouthisthengirlfriend(andfuturewife),butthelyricswererewritteninthefinalversion.[9]: 8 Thegroupdecidedtofollowup"ForRichard"withasuiteofshortsectionsofsongswrittenbyDavidSinclair,thattherestofthebandworkedonandlinkedtogethertoformaside-longtrack,"NineFeetUnderground".Although,thetrackwasrecordedinfiveseparatestagesandsplicedtogether,thebandperformedthesuiteliveasitwasfinallypresentedonthealbum,anditremainedapopulartrackintheirliveset.[9]: 9 ThealbumwasreleasedinApril1971,andthoughitdidnotchart,ithasremainedinprinteversince,andhasbeenremasteredforCDseveraltimes,[9]: 10 notablyadigitalremasterin2011byPorcupineTree'sStevenWilson.[10]"NineFeetUnderground"inparticularwasaregularfixtureonlate-nightFMradioduringtheearly1970s.[11] DespitethecriticalsuccessofIntheLandofGreyandPink,thegroupweredisappointedbyitslackofcommercialsuccess,believingthatDeccawerenotpromotingthebandproperlyorinvestingenoughmoney.InAugust1971,DavidSinclairacceptedajobwithformerSoftMachinedrummerRobertWyatt'snewband,MatchingMole.Reflectingonthedecisiontoleave,Sinclairlatersaid"Ifeltthewholethingwasgoingabitstagnant ...Iwantedtoplaywithotherpeople,buthadtoacceptthatwithCaravanitwaseitherallornothing."[9]: 11 Hastingsremembersthat"Dave'sdeparturewasaseriousblow."[12]: 5 TheremainingmemberscontinuedontogetherandRichardSinclairinvitedkeyboardistSteveMillertojointheband.[12]: 5 However,itwasimmediatelyapparentthatthestyleofthebandwouldbedifferent.SinclairandMillerwantedtoperformmorejazz-rock,whileHastingswasfrustratedthatthepreviousstylewasbeingneglected,andthatitwas"virtuallyimpossible"togetMillertoperforminDavidSinclair'sstyle.[12]: 8 Thebandstartedrecordinganewalbum,WaterlooLily(1972)inlate1971,whichwasthefirstuseoforchestralinstrumentation,arrangedbyHastingsandhisbrother,Jimmy,whohadguestedonpreviousalbums.[12]: 9 ThealbumwasreleasedinMay1972,butbythistime,musicaldifferenceshadcometoahead,andafteragigwithGenesisinJuly,thebandsplit.RichardSinclairlatersaid,"Itdidn'tquiteworkwithSteveinthebandbecausethemusicstartedtogoabittoolooseforthewaythatPyeandRichardCoughlanplayed."[12]: 10  HastingsandCoughlandecidedtocontinueasCaravan,andtheduorecruitedviolaplayerGeoffreyRichardson,bassistStuEvansandkeyboardistDerekAustinandtouredextensively.Thisline-updidnotreleaseanyrecordingsbeforeEvanswasreplacedbyJohnG.PerryandDaveSinclairrejoinedthegroupin1973.[1] TheresultingalbumForGirlsWhoGrowPlumpintheNight(1973)wasamajorcriticalachievement[1]andshowedthatthegroupcouldsurvivethelossofco-vocalistRichardSinclair.JimmyHastingsreprisedhisroleasorchestratoralongwithMartynFordandJohnBell,[13]whiletheSoftMachine'sMikeRatledgecontributedaninstrumentalpiece,"Backwards"aspartofamedley.[14]Thegroupfollowedthiswithalivealbum,CaravanandtheNewSymphonia(1974),includingorchestralarrangementsbyFord[15]andconductingbySimonJeffes.[13] PerryleftaftertheNewSymphoniaandwasreplacedbyMikeWedgwoodforthealbumCunningStunts(1975),whichreachedthetop50intheUK[16]andwasaminorhitintheUS,reachingnumber124.[1]ItwasthelastalbumreleasedonDecca,whichprecededanumberofotherproblemsintheband.DavidSinclairleftafterthealbumwasrecordedandwasreplacedbyJanSchelhaas,withtheband'ssoundbecomingmoremainstream.[13]ThegroupsignedtoMilesCopeland'sBTMRecords[1]andrecordedBlindDogatSt.Dunstans(1976)whichwasanotherminoralbumhit,[17]butbythispointthegroupwereoutofstepwiththeprevailingmusicaltrends,andafterafinalalbum,BetterbyFar(1977)onAristaRecords,[1]thegroupsplit.[13] Lateryears[edit] Caravanwerelargelydormantinthe1980suntila1990reunion,plannedasaone-offfortelevision,reinvigoratedtheircareer.[13]Thegroupcontinuedtotourintheearly1990s,beforeRichardSinclairleft.HewasreplacedbyJimLeverton,whileGeoffreyRichardsonrejoinedtheband.ThisversionofthegroupreleasedTheBattleofHastingsin1995.[13] JanSchelhaasperformingwithCaravanin2012 Thegroupcontinuedtoplayintothe21stcentury.TheyhavealsoachievedsteadysalesandafanfollowingwiththesupportofStuartMaconie'"FreakZone"showonBBC6Music.[18]AfterperformingatNEARFestin2002,[14]theyreleasedTheUnauthorizedBreakfastItemalbumin2003,whereDavidSinclairwasreplacedbyareturningJanSchelhaas.AnarchivecollectionofBBCsessionsfrom1968to1975,TheShowofOurLiveswasreleasedin2007.[18] In2010,PyeHastingsannouncedthatthebandhadresumedactivityinanticipationofaone-offconcertrecordingatMetropolisStudiosforITV,whichtookplaceinDecember2010.NewmaterialwaswrittenforadebutperformanceandthebandwasjoinedbyMarkWalkerondrumsandpercussion,asRichardCoughlan,whilststillamemberoftheband,wastooilltotourwiththegroup.[19]TheDVDofthisgigwasreleasedinMay2011andtherecordingwasshownonITVaspartoftheLegendsseries.[20] InJanuary2013,thebandcompletedasuccessfulUKtourtocelebratethe40thAnniversaryofthealbumForGirlsWhoGrowPlumpintheNight(1973).[21]Thiswasfollowedlaterintheyearbytheannouncementofanewalbum,ParadiseFilter(2013).ThealbumwasfundedbyaPledgeMusiccampaign,scheduledforreleaseon24February2014.Hastingsdeclared"nowyoucanbepartofthewholeprocessbypledgingtosupportthisproject".[22] On1December2013,foundingmemberCoughlandied,havingbeeninpoorhealthforsomeyears.[19][23]HisfuneraltookplaceinCanterburyon20December.Astatementfromthebandstated"hisuniquestyleofplayingandwonderfulcharacterwillbesorelymissed."[24] CaravanheadlinedtheRitesofSpringfestival(RoSfest)festivalinPennsylvania,USAfrom2–4May2014. Musicalstyle[edit] CaravanareconsideredakeyexampleoftheCanterburyscenegenre.[25]Theirrecordsgenerallyindicateajazzinfluence,andthegroup'slyricshavebeendescribedaswhimsicalandvery"English",particularlyduringRichardSinclair'stenureintheband.[26]FollowingSinclair'sdeparture,themusicaldirectionhasbeenpredominantlyledbyPyeHastings,whopreferredasofterpoprockapproach.[14]ThoughthegroupshareacommonhistorywithSoftMachine,theyhavebeenconsideredmoremelodicandclosertofolkmusic[27]andfrequentlydisplayingasenseofhumour.Thegroupwerepredominantlyalbum-oriented,butHastingsbelievesthegrouprecordedenoughstraightforwardpopthatcouldhavebeenhitsinglesiftherecordcompanyhadtakensufficientinterest.[28]
