U.S.MarineCaptainStevenHillerisdeployeddespitebeingonleave;hisgirlfriend,JasmineDubrow,worriedaboutthealiens,decidestofleeLosAngeleswithherson,DylanDubrow.InNewYorkCity,DavidLevinson,anMIT-trainedsatellitetechnician,decodesasignalembeddedwithinglobalsatellitetransmissions,realizingitisthealiens'countdowntimerforacoordinatedattack.Withhelpfromhisex-wife,WhiteHouseCommunicationsDirectorConstanceSpano,DavidandhisfatherJuliusgainaccesstotheOvalOfficeandalertPresidentThomasWhitmoretothethreat.
