U.S.MarineCaptainStevenHillerisdeployeddespitebeingonleave;hisgirlfriend,JasmineDubrow,worriedaboutthealiens,decidestofleeLosAngeleswithherson,DylanDubrow.InNewYorkCity,DavidLevinson,anMIT-trainedsatellitetechnician,decodesasignalembeddedwithinglobalsatellitetransmissions,realizingitisthealiens'countdowntimerforacoordinatedattack.Withhelpfromhisex-wife,WhiteHouseCommunicationsDirectorConstanceSpano,DavidandhisfatherJuliusgainaccesstotheOvalOfficeandalertPresidentThomasWhitmoretothethreat. PrincipalphotographybeganinJuly1995inNewYorkCity.AsecondunitgatheredplateshotsandestablishingshotsofManhattan,Washington,D.C.,anRVcommunityinFlagstaff,Arizona,andtheVeryLargeArrayonthePlainsofSanAgustin,NewMexico.[24]ThemaincrewalsofilmedinnearbyCliffsidePark,NewJerseybeforemovingtotheformerKaiserSteelmillinFontana,Californiatofilmthepost-attackLosAngelessequences.[27]TheproductionthenmovedtoWendover,Utah,andWestWendover,Nevada,[28]wherethedesertsdoubledforImperialValley,andtheWendoverAirportdoubledfortheElToroandArea51exteriors.[29]ItwasherewherePullmanfilmedhispre-battlespeech.Immediatelybeforefilmingthescene,DevlinandPullmandecidedtoadd"Today,wecelebrateourIndependenceDay!"totheendofthespeech.Atthetime,theproductionwasnicknamed"ID4"becauseWarnerBros.ownedtherightstothetitlebecauseofafilmfrom1983whichisalsocalledIndependenceDay.DevlinhadhopedthatifFoxexecutivesnoticedtheadditionindailies,theimpactofthenewdialoguewouldhelpthemtowintherightstothetitle.[7]Pullmanhadstatedina2020interviewthatFoxhadotherwisebeenaimingtouseDoomsdayforthefilm'sreleasetomatchwithotherdisasterfilmsofthetime,andDevlinandEmmerichhadhopedtheimpactofthisspeechscenewouldhelpwinFoxovertotheIndependenceDayname.[30]Therighttousethetitlewaseventuallywontwoweekslater.[11]
