Aboutmonitorresolution Your monitor’sresolutionisdescribedinpixeldimensions.Forexample, ifyourmonitorresolutionandyourphoto’spixeldimensionsare thesamesize,thephotowillfillthescreenwhenviewedat100%. Howlargeanimageappearson‑screendependsonacombinationof factors—thepixeldimensionsoftheimage,themonitorsize,and themonitorresolutionsetting.InPhotoshop,youcanchangethe imagemagnificationon‑screen,soyoucaneasilyworkwithimages ofanypixeldimensions. Bilinear Amethodthataddspixelsbyaveragingthecolorvaluesof surroundingpixels.Itproducesmedium-qualityresults. Bicubic Aslowerbutmoreprecisemethodbasedonanexamination ofthevaluesofsurroundingpixels.Usingmorecomplexcalculations, BicubicproducessmoothertonalgradationsthanNearestNeighbor orBilinear. BicubicSmoother AgoodmethodforenlargingimagesbasedonBicubicinterpolation butdesignedtoproducesmootherresults. BicubicSharper AgoodmethodforreducingthesizeofanimagebasedonBicubic interpolationwithenhancedsharpening.Thismethodmaintainsthedetail inaresampledimage.IfBicubicSharperoversharpenssomeareas ofanimage,tryusingBicubic. Note: Youcanspecifyadefaultinterpolationmethod tousewheneverPhotoshopresamplesimagedata.ChooseEdit > Preferences >General(Windows)orPhotoshop > Preferences >General(Mac OS),andthenchoose amethodfromtheImageInterpolationMethodsmenu. Changepixeldimensionsofanimage Changinganimage’spixeldimensionsaffectsnotonlyitsonscreensizebutalsoitsimagequalityanditsprintedcharacteristics—eitheritsprinteddimensionsoritsimageresolution. Toentervaluesaspercentagesofthecurrentdimensions,choose Percentastheunitofmeasurement.Thenewfilesizefortheimage appearsatthetopoftheImageSizedialog box,withtheoldfilesizeinparentheses. MakesurethatResampleImageisselected,andchoose aninterpolationmethod. Ifyourimagehaslayerswithstylesappliedtothem, selectScaleStylestoscaletheeffectsintheresizedimage.This optionisavailableonlyifyouselectedConstrainProportions. Whenyoufinishsettingoptions,click OK. Note: Forbestresultswhenyouproduceasmaller image,downsampleandapplytheUnsharpMaskfilter.Toproduce alargerimage,rescantheimageatahigherresolution. Changetheprintdimensionsand resolution When creatinganimageforprintmedia,it’susefultospecifyimage sizeintermsoftheprinteddimensionsandtheimageresolution. Thesetwomeasurements,referredtoasthedocumentsize, determinethetotalpixelcountandthereforethe file sizeoftheimage;documentsizealsodetermines thebase sizeatwhichanimageisplacedintoanotherapplication.Youcan furthermanipulatethescaleoftheprintedimageusingthePrint command;however,changesyoumakeusingthePrintcommandaffect onlytheprintedimage,notthedocumentsizeoftheimagefile.If youturnonresamplingfortheimage,youcanchangeprintdimensions andresolutionindependently(andchangethetotalnumberofpixels intheimage).Ifyouturnoffresampling,youcanchangeeither thedimensionsortheresolution—Photoshopadjuststheothervalue automaticallytopreservethetotalpixelcount.Forthehighest printquality,it’sgenerallybesttochangethedimensionsand resolutionfirst,withoutresampling.Thenresampleonlyasnecessary. ChooseImage >ImageSize. Changetheprintdimensions,imageresolution,orboth: Tochangeonlytheprintdimensionsor onlytheresolutionandadjustthetotalnumberofpixelsinthe imageproportionately,selectResampleImageandthenchoosean interpolationmethod.Tochangetheprintdimensionsandresolutionwithout changingthetotalnumberofpixelsintheimage,deselectResample Image.
