Wethinkwecaneasilyseeintotheheartsofothersbasedontheflimsiestofclues.Wejumpatthechancetojudgestrangers.Wewouldneverdothattoourselves,ofcourse.Wearenuancedandcomplexandenigmatic.Butthestrangeriseasy.IfIcanconvinceyouofonethinginthisbook,letitbethis:Strangersarenoteasy.TalkingtoStrangersisabookwithaboldpremise:tryingtoexplainwhyayoungblackwomannamedSandraBlandwaspulledoverforaminortrafficviolationinruralTexas,arrestedandjailed,andwhyshecommittedsuicideinhercellthreedayslater.Aswithhisotherbooks,Mr.Gladwellattemptsthisexplanationthroughanexplorationofpsychologicalandsocialscienceresearch.Theparadoxoftalkingtostrangersisthatneedtotalktothem,butwe’reterribleatit.Weinstinctivelyhavea“defaulttotruth”operatingassumptionthatthepeoplewearedealingwitharehonest.Wefalloutofthattruthdefaultmodeonlywhenourdoubtsandmisgivingsrisetothepointwherewecannolongerexplainthemaway.Thisdefaultisallowstheefficientcommunicationrequiredbyoursociety,butitplacesusatriskofoccasionallybeinggrosslydeceivedbythelikesofaJerrySanduskyoraLarryNassar.Webelieveintransparency—theideathat“thewayastrangerlooksandactsisareliablecluetothewaytheyfeel”—andwetendtojudgepeople’shonestybasedontheirdemeanor.Well-spoken,confidentpeoplewithafirmhandshake,thosewhoarefriendlyandengaging,areseenasbelievable.Nervous,shifty,stammering,uncomfortablepeoplewhogivewindy,convolutedexplanationsarenotseenasbelievable.Whilepeople—includingprofessionalinvestigators—aregoodatjudgingthecredibilityofthosewhosehonestyanddemeanormatch,peopleareterribleatjudgingthecredibilityoftheconfidentliarorthenervoustruthteller,whichishowyouendupwithAmandaKnoxspendingyearsinanItalianprisondespitenoevidencelinkinghertothecrime.Finally,wealsofailtoappreciatethecontextinwhichthestrangerisoperating.Suicideratesarecoupledtoeaseofavailability.Ifyoutakeawayaneasyway,asBritaindidwhentheychangedthetypeofgasusedinthemid-20thcentury,theratedrops.Peopledonotsimplykillthemselvesanotherway.Similarly,ifyoupatrolahigh-crimecityblock,thecrimeratedropsratherthansimplyrelocatingafewblockaway.Whenyouconfrontastranger,youhavetoconsiderwhereandwhenyouareconfrontingthem,becausethosetwothingspowerfullyinfluenceyourinterpretationofthem.It’sallveryinteresting,butdoesMr.GladwellsucceedinexplainingtheSandraBlandtragedy?Idon’tthinkso,notfullyanyway,thoughIwaspersuadedaboutsomeaspectsofitperhaps,suchaswhytheofficerpulledheroverinthefirstplace.Andwhilethechapteronalcohol’spotentialroleinmisunderstandingstrangerswasbelievableataanabstractlevel,IwasnotpersuadedbyhiswaaaaaaytoocharitabletakeonBrockTurner.Still,TalkingtoStrangersisanotherthought-provokingridebyMr.Gladwell.Recommended.
