Methodology Theproducerpriceindexesisobtainedthroughthesystematicsamplingofindustries.Intheminingandmanufacturingsectors,priceinformationfromvirtuallyeveryindustryiscaptured.Bycontrast,althoughPPIcoverageoftheservicesectoroftheeconomyissubstantial(morethan70percent),itremainsincomplete.ThePPIprogramalsoincludesdatathattrackothersectorsoftheeconomy:agriculture,fishing,forestry,utilities(naturalgasandelectricity),andconstruction.AsofJanuary2014,thePPIprogramincludedthefollowingindexes: Priceindexesforapproximately535mining,forestry,utility,construction,manufacturing,andservicesindustries;over500indexesforgroupingsofindustries;andmorethan4,000indexesforspecificwithin-industryproductandservicecategories; Morethan3,700commoditypriceindexesforgoodsandabout800forservices(seasonallyadjustedandnotseasonallyadjusted),organizedbyproduct,service,andenduse; Over600indexesforaggregatemeasuresofpricechange,includingtheaggregationsystemforfinaldemand–intermediatedemand(FD–ID). Together,theseelementsconstituteasystemofpricemeasuresdesignedtomeettheneedforbothaggregateinformationanddetailedapplications,suchasfollowingpricetrendsforspecificindustriesandproducts,aswellastheneedfortrackingpricemovementsatamoreaggregatedlevelrelativetotheoveralleconomy. Universe ThePPIuniverseconsistsoftheoutputofallindustriesinthegoods-producingsectorsoftheU.S.economy—mining,manufacturing,agriculture,fishing,andforestry—aswellastheoutputofthenaturalgas,electricity,andconstructionindustries.Recycledgoodsthatcompetewiththosemadeinthegoods-producingsectors,suchaswasteandscrapmaterials,alsoareoutputsthatarepartofthesurvey.ImportsnolongerareincludedwithinthePPIuniverse;however,theBLSInternationalPriceProgrampublishespriceindexesforbothimportsandexports.(Seechapter15.)Goodsshippedbetweenestablishmentsownedbythesamecompany(termedinterplantorintracompanytransfers)areincluded,asisasubstantialpercentageofthedomesticproductionofgoodsspecificallymadeforthemilitary. Classifications TherearethreemainPPIclassificationstructureswhichdrawfromthesamepoolofpriceinformationprovidedtotheBLSbycooperatingcompanyreporters: Industryclassification.AProducerPriceIndexforanindustryisameasureofchangesinpricesreceivedfortheindustry'soutputsoldoutsidetheindustry(thatis,itsnetoutput).ThePPIpublishesapproximately535industrypriceindexesincombinationwithover4,000specificproductlineandproductcategorysub-indexes,aswellas,roughly500indexesforgroupingsofindustries.NorthAmericanIndustryClassificationSystem(NAICS2017)indexcodesprovidecomparabilitywithawideassortmentofindustry-baseddataforothereconomicprograms,includingproductivity,production,employment,wages,andearnings.
