HowtotrySuperResolution ThenewfeatureiscalledSuperResolutionand,ifyouhaveacurrentCreativeCloudsubscriptionthatincludesPhotoshop,youshouldhaveaccesstoitrightnow.  Tofindit,openaphotointheAdobeCameraRaw(ACR)interface.Ifyouopenarawphototakenfromadigitalcamera,PhotoshopshouldautomaticallyopenthefileinACRwithoutanyextrasteps.Ifyou’retryingtoopenanotherkindoffile,likeaJPEGorPNG,youcangothroughAdobeBridgeandopeninCameraRaw.  Onceyou’reintheinterface,rightclickontheimageandclick“enhance”orusethiskeyboardshortcut:ctrl+shift+D.Thiswillbringupadialogboxwithazoomed-inpreviewofyourimage.Afterthepreviewrenders,itwillautomaticallyshowupintheimagebox.Clickingandholdingontheimagewillrevertittoitspre-enhancedstatesoyoucanseethedirectcomparisonbetweenthetwoversions.Thisdialogboxwillalsogiveyouanestimateofhowlongitwilltaketoconverttheimageifyouchoosetocommitthechanges.Thisisacomputing-intensivetask,soifyou’reusinganolderorunderpoweredcomputer,itmaytakeawhile.  Onceyouclick“enhance”itwillgothroughtheprocessofconvertingtheimageandapreviewwillshowupinthebottomofthescreenrightnexttotheoriginal.  WithSuperResolutionon WithoutSuperResolution Whathappenstothephotos? AdobeisrelyingonitsAIplatformcalledSenseitocrunchthedataneededtoenhanceyourphotos.Thefeatureaimstodoubleboththehorizontalandverticallinesofresolutionintheimage,whichresultsinquadruplethenumberofpixels. Intheexampleabove,IrantheprocessonarawfilefrommyoldCanon6Dfull-frameDSLR,whichIgotsoonafteritcameoutin2012.Ithasarespectable20.2-megapixelresolution,whichclocksinaround5,472x3,648.Aftertheenhancement,however,Photoshopspitouta79.8-megapixelfilewithatotalresolutionmeasuring10,944x7,296. Whenyou’relookingatthephotoszoomedout,youcanseeadifference,particularlyinareaswithalotofdetail(typicallyreferredtoas“highfrequency”areas).Thelinesinthefencingclearlybecomemoredefinedandthewholethingappearsgenerallysharper.TheseimprovementslikelystemfromarelatedfeaturecalledRawDetails,whichlivesinthesamedialogboxasSuperResolution.RawDetailsincreasesharpnessaroundtheedgesofobjectstomakethemappearmorecrisp. https://youtu.be/-uNdijku7iY/ Whenyouzoomintothepixellevel,it’sobviousthatthereissomeimagedegradationthatcomesfromtheupscaling,butitalsolooksdecidedlylesspixelatedandmaintainsmoreofthedetailthanifyouhadsimplyzoomedinorchangedthesizewiththeimagesizetool.It’seasiertoreadverysmalltextandmakeoutthelookonthedog’sface,forexample.  OnceyouclickopenfromCameraRawintoPhotoshopitself,you’llfindthatithascreatedaDNGfile,whichisamoregenericformorrawformatthat’scompatiblewithamuchwiderarrayofsoftwarethanthecameramakers’proprietaryformats.  Whywouldyouwanttouseit? Whilemy6Disold,itsresolutionisn’tthatpaltry.SomethinglikeSuperResolutioncanreallycomeinhandywhenyou’reworkingwithmucholderDSLRs.Myfirstseriousdigitalcamera,forinstance,wasaCanon10D,whichpromisedawhopping6megapixelswaybackin2003.Withjust6megapixelsofresolution,that’snotevenenoughpixelstonativelyfilla4Kscreen,whichrequiresmorethan8megapixels.Oncewegoupto8K,itwilltakemorethan33megapixelstofillupascreenwithoutupscaling.  Inadditiontoolderandlower-endcameras,thisisalsohandyevenifyoujustwanttocropdeeplyintoyourownphotos.Forinstance,I’vecroppedhardintothisimagetakenwiththe45-megapixelCanonR5,whichdrasticallyreduceditsoverallresolution.Theenhancefunction,however,broughtbacksomeofthatdetailIwouldhaveotherwiselost.  It’snotmagic Ifyou’rehopingtorescuethatcherishedimagethatonlyexistedonFriendsterbackin2005,butitonlymeasures800x600pixels,don’texpectSuperResolutiontoworkamiracleandletyoublowituptopostersize.Also,themoreimagedataithastoworkwith,thebetterjobitwilldoontheupscaling.So,arawfilefromarelativelyrecentDSLRormirrorlesscamerawillstandupmuchbetterthanalowlyJPEGorPNGthatyoupulleddownofftheweb.  Adobealsoisn’ttheonlygameintownwhenitcomestoAIupscaling.TopazLabshasbeendoingagreatjobwithitsalgorithmicenlargingforsometimenow.Thatsoftwarecanincreaseanimage’ssizebyupto600percentundertherightcircumstances.  Attheendoftheday,however,Adobeisstillthemassivegorillainthephoto-editingspaceandhavingthistechbakedintoitsflagshipphotoeditorisabigdeal.AswithanySensei-basedsoftware,Adobeplanstorefinethealgorithmsovertime,whichshouldmakeSuperResolutionworkevenbetterdownthelineasanincentiveforpeopletokeepthoseCreativeCloudsubscriptionsactive.
