DNV GL has decided to combine its current Oil & Gas and Power & Renewables businesses into one new business area called Energy Systems. DNVGLsaidon Tuesdaythatthemovewouldbetterreflecttheemergingenergyfuture,which willseerenewablestakeagreatershareoftheenergymixanddecarbonizationto becomeamajorfocus. EnergySystems, whichwillstartoperatingfrom1February2021,willprovidecertification, advisory,anddigitalmonitoringservicestotheentireenergyvaluechain. DitlevEngel,CEOofthecurrentEnergybusinessareasince2016,willleadthenewbusinessarea,whichwillconsistofapproximately4,000energyexperts,makingittheworld’sleadingresourceofindependentenergyexpertsandcertificationbody. RemiEriksen,grouppresidentandCEOofDNVGL,said:“ThecreationofEnergySystemsisourresponsetoarapidlychangingenergymarketinsearchfordeeperdecarbonization.Wewanttoenableourcustomerstotackletheenergytransition–faster. “Bycombiningourexpertise,wewillbetterservecustomersoperatingin,andenteringtheenergymarket.Thisnewstructurewillhelpusserveallplayersintheenergymarket”. Whilerenewableenergyisincreasingmarketshare,thecompanywillcontinuetoworkwiththeoilandgassectorasitrefocusesondecarbonization. DNVGLbelievesthatthesectorwillplayanessentialroleintheenergytransitionwithnaturalgassettobecomethesinglelargestenergysourcebythemiddleofthedecade,whilehydrogen,ammonia,andcarboncaptureandstoragewillbeimportanttoolsinthelowcarbontoolkitforthehardtoabatesectors. DitlevEngel,CEOofEnergySystems,said:“JoiningforcesinEnergySystemsgivesDNVGLthesizetoworkwiththekeyindustryplayerstohelpscalegreenenergytechnologyandoptimizesafetyfromproductiontoconsumption. “Thereisnohidingfromthefactthatweareoncoursefordamagingglobalwarming,butwehavethetechnologytotransitionfaster.IseeagreaterwillingnessamongstpolicymakersandcompaniestospeedupthedecarbonizationofthesectorandweatDNVGLarereadytoplayourpartsothatwecantackletheneededenergytransformationmuchfaster”. InaseparateannouncementonTuesday,DNVGLsaidthatitacquiredU.S.-basedengineeringconsultancyEnergyandResourceSolutions(ERS),aspartofastrategytogrowinkeymarkets.Consistingofaround80experts,ERS,likeDNVGL,helpscustomerstomanageandreduceenergycoststhroughprogramdesign,outreach,implementation,andevaluationservices.ERSwillbeanintegratedpartofDNVGL. OntheacquisitionofERS,Eriksensaid:“Giventhespeedoftheenergytransition,itisnaturalthatwelookoutsideourorganizationforacquisitionopportunities.Thedomainexpertiseanddigital-firstapproachdemonstratedbyERSisalignedwithourvisionandservices,andIamsureourcustomersinNorthAmericaandbeyondwillbedelightedwehaveevenmoreexpertsinourranks”.
