AstrafficalongtheSilkRoadincreased,sodidtheconstructionofcaravanserais.Theywereneededassafehavens—notjustfromextremeclimatesandweather,butalsofrombanditswhotargetedcaravansloadedwithsilks,spices,andotherexpensivegoods.Infact,caravanseraiswerebuiltatregularintervalssothatmerchantswouldnothavetospendthenightexposedtothedangersoftheroad.Theyappearedroughly32-40kilometers(20–25miles)apart—aboutaday’sjourney—onthebusiestSilkRoadroutes. Thedesignofthesebuildingsalsoreflectedtheirprotectivepurpose.Oftenbuiltjustoutsidethenearesttownorvillage,theywereencircledbyimmensewallsresemblingthoseofafort.Caravansenteredthroughahigh,massivegatethatcouldbesecuredfromwithinatnightwithheavychains.Aporterstoodguardjustpastthegate,chargedwithsafeguardingthepersons,goods,andanimalsinside. Theinteriorofacaravanserailookedmorelikeaninnthanafortress,however.Alargeground-floorcourtyardringedwithstoreroomsandstablesforcamels,donkeys,andhorseswouldoftenhaveacornerforcookfiresaswell.Small,unfurnishedroomsforlodgerswerefoundonthesecondfloor.Somelargercaravanseraisalsofeaturedabathhouseandprayerroom.
